This year the order of the holiday was a little unhappiness, a serious candy shortage and smashing pumpkins—no, not the slightly fringe rock group from the 1990s.  I’m talking about the street in front of our house on October 31.  Apparently there were a few unhappy trick-or-treaters too. What shall we receive in our little orange plastic ubiquitous pumpkin this year?  There might be a candy bar, could be some sort of gummy somethings, maybe a mini bag o’pretzels, then again maybe we’ll get a rock.  It all depends on whether the whack-a-doodle three-year old will freak out on us on the sidewalk, in full costume, in the dark, in front of all our neighbors.  We had no idea what to expect. It is hot here.  Hotter than usual and the heat has come to visit much earlier.  We sweat in the 90-105 degrees, and try to stay indoors as much as possible.  That’s hard with a three-year old.  They still have energy and still get bored even when it’s too hot to go out.  There are others in this family that relish the heat and prefer a good nap on the deck to the air-conditioned comfort of the house. I have to write this on the way home on the train.  If I had more time to spend as I usually do, I would, but I don’t.  This is what life has been like lately: a list of TODOs that each time you are able to cross something off, life adds two more items.  It’s the reason we have not had a single post since mid-December.  Here is just a flavor of the last few weeks:

I knew that it wasn’t some weatherman’s wet dream—the snow storm of snow storms at Christmas—when the temperature started dropping as the evening set in and precipitation was reported to be 100%.  That was Friday night.  Read the rest of this entry »

It does not often snow here during the Christmas Season.  We are just a bit too far south, just a bit too close to the water and just don’t get that much snow period.  So when the forecast said an inch and it began trickling down early this morning, I shrugged my shoulders.  But then the big fat flakes began to fall and they started covering the ground and then the sidewalk and after a while the accumulation was measurable.  It’s certainly no blizzard but it has managed to usher in the whole Christmas winter wonderland fantasy.  Read the rest of this entry »
