I just did a recent toy purge and anything requiring batteries suffered the worst fate.
That said, I was also recently the parent whose child was walking aimlessly through a store playing Angry Birds the other day. He is, of course, 5. And Kindergarten makes him a NIGHTMARE. We were mattress shopping and the boy just needed a mindless diversion.
I'm not ready to get into the world of the Nintendo DS, though. I think Santa will be disappointing my boy this year.

Yes, "Moderation" is the key word. Just like drinking, one can abuse it terribly. But yeah, kids these days are becoming like the Borg on Star Trek, half human, half machine.

p.s. If we didn't have a DVD player in the mini-van, I would jump out of the car the first chance I could get.

It is possible to have a balance though it is a struggle. I have 2 boys who are 10 and 11 and 2 girls who are 7 and 6 and I have had to implement some serious limits. One of my sons will sit for hours on his computer or ipod and is hard to disengage. For all of my kids, I have implemented a "no electronics during the week" rule (even in the summer!). It really helped him to understand there was a time and place. Despite that, I do have some times where we have to endure the pouting and fussiness. But, on the other hand, we have had a great week on vacation. both kids have had times where they have used their ipods and both have willingly disengaged to go outside on a nature walk...play card games...and have fun with their siblings.
As a single mom, the TV in the car is a sanity issue (for me). we take several long trips a year and it stops (for periods of time) the constant..."How much farther?...Are we there yet?...where are we?" which is distracting -- not to mention the fighting that happens when they are bored...
